About the Band

Squarewell was an indie rock band from Louisville, Kentucky. Founded in 2002 by Jeff Drake and Martin Kehl with Matt Jaggers and Bryan Jones as their band mates, it released three CDs, a demo and one 7” vinyl record before the band parted ways.
The Louisville music scene
Louisville has a thriving music scene with a large number of indie bands and singer/songwriters. This scene is where Squarewell got its start. Defining itself as emo/hardcore and citing Thursday, Elliott, Boysetsfire, Quicksand and Taking Back Sunday as influences, they kept performing and writing songs until they recorded their first demo. Their tours took them all over the East Coast and built their fan base. By then, they were ready to record an album.
Squarewell’s discography
Squarewell recorded its first album, “Two Toy Model,” which they released on the Engineer label in August 2004. Recorded by John Naclerio and produced by Naclerio with Squarewell, the song featured 11 tracks. They followed the success of “Two Toy Model” with a second album entitled “After the Show” which was released by Elkion Records. Their third album, “Lights and Cables” was released by Millipede Records.
The end
Squarewell planned a fourth album entitled “Sound Tracks,” but it was never finished. The band has broken up, and its website has expired. Even so, its members have remained active in other bands.
Squarewell gained a large fan following, but the band did not last long. However, its music remains as an example of what the Louisville music scene had to offer at the turn of the 21st century.
